    Animal Husbandry Department

    Introduction

    Animal Husbandry is an all-year-round livelihood source of occupation for the livestock owners. But nowadays it is emerged as a full-fledged industry. It helps in upliftment of rural socio-economic status & problems of unemployment. Animal Husbandry sector has maximum employment generation potential. Different aspects of Animal Husbandry have helped the animal owners and all the businesses related to animal husbandry flourish tremendously. It has also contributed to raise the social and economic status of people in the rural areas through economic development. Therefore, Animal Husbandry plays a major important public utility role and adds in the national income through the rearing of livestock and production of related products and by-products viz. milk, meat, egg etc. Through the export of some of the products, the country gets valuable foreign exchange. In view of providing modern facilities for the development and growth of livestock, the Department of Animal Husbandry has been established mainly with the aim to provide facilities for Artificial Insemination and Animal Health.

    A cabinet-level minister is the head of the animal husbandry department. Secretary (AD) heads the administrative division of the department. The regional system is headed by the Commissioner of Animal Husbandry. Under the guidance of Hon. Secretary (AD), Commissioner Animal Husbandry administers the department through the Commissionerate of Animal Husbandry, Aundh, Pune-411067.

    At the district level The Animal Husbandry Department in Zilla Parishad comes Under additional Chief Executive Officer, District Animal Husbandry Officers are responsible for controlling the work to implement department’s main objectives and schemes effectively at the field level, the district is divided into 11 blocks headed by Livestock Development Officer (Extension). The Veterinary services are provided through 140 veterinary institutes including 57 Grade I Dispensaries and 83 Grade II institutes and 1 IPD block.

    Vision:

    To ensure economic and nutritional development in the District through improved animal husbandry techniques.

    Mission:

    In proportion to the increasing population of the District.to eliminate the gap between the demand and availability of milk, eggs and meat and through it strengthening the rural economy and eliminating the unemployment in the rural areas.

    Objectives & Functions

    Implementation of Livestock Policy of state for the District is a major function of Department of Animal Husbandry, Zilla Parishad Beed. This work is carried out by implementing various development schemes from plan and non-plan funds through various organizations and officials working under the department.

    The major functions of the Department include the following important aspects:-

    • Effective implementation of animal husbandry policies – increasing productivity through genetic improvement of livestock through artificial insemination.
    • To increase animal products such as milk production, egg production, meat, wool by protecting livestock from diseases.
    • To provide means of supplementary income and self-employment to rural farmers and needy beneficiaries by distributing milch animals, goats, poultry birds.
    • Increasing the availability of fodder and feed for livestock.
    • Providing information about animal husbandry schemes to animal husbandry under publicity and promotion programmes. Also to implement the State Training Policy.
